Additional personnel: Apollonia (vocals); Novi Novog (violin, viola); David Coleman, Suzie Katayama (cello). Engineers include: Susan Rogers, Peggy Mac, David Riukin. A soundtrack to a movie so appalling that it is infinitely wiser to let the record stand on its own merits. While Prince cavorted in purple kitchen foil and rode his Harley in high heels, the real star of the film, the music, was doing all the talking. A knit of funk and rock, a heavily stylized Hendrix guitar lick here and there, and a wilfully danceable backbeat all made for a huge commercial smash, and the first real international introduction for many people to a star-in-waiting. 'Darling Nikki' accidentally set the PMRC ball rolling, but the heady lilt of the title track and the crushing 'When Doves Cry' can pardon him that. Minimize

Epinions Baby, I'm A Star: Prince Hits The Big Time With Purple Rain

by  floatingcity,  Jul 2, 2007
Pros: High quality and inventive pop/rock/funk with personal character and musical complexity.
Cons: A couple of songs are great while the album's on, but don't stick afterwards.
The Bottom Line: "Purple Rain" is a landmark eighties record that could find a welcome home in anyone's music collection.
Review: Well, this is the biggie. While Prince’s 1982 album "1999" had introduced him to mainstream audiences with crossover hits like the title track and “Little Red Corvette”, 1984’s “Purple Rain” was the release that made him a ...

Epinions Where you get to meet the stickiest of the Nikkis

by  pyfr,  Sep 7, 2006
Pros: Prince beating everybody at their own game. Slow songs, dance numbers, rockers- DAMN!
Cons: Wish they would've included some of that eerie incidental music from the movie.
The Bottom Line: Five stars and then some. An indispensable 80's smash that shows no sign of aging. One of the most carefully crafted and sweeping albums I've ever laid ears on.
Review: I’ve always identified strongly with Prince. In addition to being a fellow Gemini (along with speeddemon, roheblius, and Jim Nabors, three of my favorite people), he’s had an unusual and sometimes tumultuous life. He also likes to watch exotic ...
